Cyanotype Masks
May 2020 • Cyanotype Chemistry
Masks are a symbol of this pandemic that we are living trough today; they are the one item that everyone in the world is expected to wear.
I crafted a complete set of 11 masks out of recycled bed sheets, which were dyed with cyanotype chemistry. I repurposed old fabric to create the masks, paying homage to the people who are crafting and DIYing their own masks to wear. I designed some with a serious tone to indicate the severity of the situation, while designing others with a fun and playful hand to indicate the positive attitudes that we need to keep while self-isolating.
This project was for a class called "Alternative Approaches to Photography," in which I learn about this photographic printing process called cyanotypes. The light sensitive chemicals allow the artist to create a cyanotype on pretty much any material they desire.
