Collide & Compliment
June 2021 • Photography
Over the past few months, I have taken photographs of the places that helped mold me into the person I am today. Reflecting back on the photographs, I discovered that I have a certain way of viewing the world, regardless of if I am in my childhood neighborhood, in my first NYC apartment, or in a dental office pursuing my future career. I like organization, order, and structure with a little bit of mystery and ambiguity. This is why I decided to present all of the photographs in this piece in pairs, to show how different aspects of my life collide and compliment each other in their composition.
My process begins in several different ways. Either I dedicate a time to get ready and go hunt for photos, or I simply whip out my camera during my daily routine. From this process, I found myself being more reflective and taking the time to slow down and appreciate everything around me. As Garry Winogrand said, all things are photographable. While the images may not be of the most exciting things in the world, they are all objects that I’ve gotten to know very well over the course of my life. All together, this piece shows how the world appears to me through the lens of my eyes.
